The Family of Edward Hale of Ewelme, Oxfordshire.

Ewelme, vulg Newelme, Oxfordshire, on the south side of Britwell, was so called from it's elm-trees. Here was a palace built in 1424. In 1720 an urn was discovered on the common here, near the old Roman way called Ikenild-street, that had copper coins, some of them as ancient as the arrival of Julius Caesar in England. Fifteen houses were consumed in this little place by fire on the 23rd of May, 1755.
(The Universal British Directory, 1791. Volume IV, Pg 790.)

Monumental Inscription from the tomb of Edward Hale,
St. Mary's Parish Church, Ewelme.

Image © Copyright Paul Collins 2002. Displayed with permission.

The fourth son, Edward, was born about 1649. There is no evidence that he went to Oxford, or that he was called to the bar. He married Mary, the daughter of Edmund Goodyere of Heythrop in Oxfordshire, and it is said that he had two sons and three daughters before he died in 1682. [Sir Matthew] Hale made a marriage settlement on 2nd August 1674, settling land in Ewelme, Oxfordshire on Edward for life, with remainder to Mary his wife for life, and to Robert their son tail male. This settlement appears to have been made after the marriage, as it specifically refers to Edward's son, Robert. Edward was in the habit of obtaining advances from his father, as in the codicil to his will he [Sir Matthew Hale] forgave his son all debts due to him.
(Matthew Hale, by Edmund Heward. Robert Hale, London, 1972. Pg 113.)

[Sir Matthew Hale's] fourth son Edward, married Mary, the daughter of Edmund Goodyere, Esqu; of Heythrop, in Oxfordshire, and still lives (1681), he has two sons and three daughters.
(The Life and Death of Sir Matthew Hale, by Gilbert Burnet. Printed for William Shrowsbery, at the Bible in Duke-Lane, 1682. The first edition was published in 1681.)
